The Scythians are thought to have been the first people to geld or castrate their horses. These were prized as war horses because they were quiet; without mating urges, they were less prone to call out to other horses, easier to keep in groups, and less likely to fight with one another.

I do not know who were the first people to give male cats (gibs) the snip. I have however just joined their ranks, with the intrepid Teddy finding his way under the knife this morning. He is now at home, sitting very quietly indeed. He is not looking particularly likely to mount a cavalry charge or anything else, any time soon.
