A couple of doors down from Collins Stores, on the corner of Palmerston Road and Canning Road is Star Domestic Appliances at number 89. They don't exactly enhance the neighbourhood with the strew of washing machines and fridges they crowd the land in front of their premises with every day.
These items, wrapped in plastic as if all shiny and new, are suitable for the houses of multiple occupation which they are mainly destined for as Walthamstow makes its gradual transition from some really rather desirable residential areas back towards some of the less desirable neighbrouhoods that lurk within our midst. They are not the only culprits of course - fellow pavement spoilers Premier Carpets and Furniture , further along Palmerston Road, are also guilty of dragging down the tone a tad, even if both firms are no doubt doing it on their own land or land they rent. I don't know what it is about washing machine sellers and street corners, but there is a firm in a similar line of business at number 1 Blackhorse Road, making the least of the corner with Coppermill Lane.
