The Mall is a rather bland place, with the kind of hard tiling in the public areas which reminds me of school showers. Not the kind of place which would put me in the mood to buy Roseby's soft bed linen but a perfect place for them to have sold their range of bathroom curtains if they had marketed them well, which to be honest, they didn't. The store could never decide how it was presenting itself, holding 'sales' and other come-ons quite regularly but being never cheap enough to justify the poor presentation of its merchandise. It came across to me as a shop which would have been happier in a shed by the side of a motorway with a large carpark in front of it than being esconsed in our Mall, but the ranges were far too limited for that.
Sadly though, there is now no time for them to buck up their approach, as the shop at the Mall is to be closed. The shop is actually one of 280 stores in the chain owned by parent Indian company Gujarat Heavy Chemicals Limited, which owns and has mis-managed the "Yorkshire based" textiles brand. They called in KPMG as administrators to the company last month, with the usual nonsense peddled that there would be no redundancies. The truth has been announced however that Roseby's are to close the Walthamstow store.
Howard Smith, Joint Administrator and KPMG Restructuring Associate Partner, said: 'It is with regret that we have had to close both the distribution centre in Selby and 31 more stores across the country. We anticipate further store closures next week, while we continue to have dialogue with a number of parties who are interested in either the whole or parts of the business.'
Shoppers may like to try out rivals Linen Direct further down the High Street or making their own curtains, purchasing their materials at one of the many fabric shops in the High Street, such as the Textile Centre, P.C.E. Fabric Store, The Fabric Store, New Fabric Store, Hussain Fabrics or even Ferdine Fashion Fabrics.
