There is currently a hand-written advert in the High Street on the door of Shanze Hairdressers, on display to the public:
3 bedrooms for rent at 100, 75 and 50 pounds per week including all bills:
"Only Muslim People, couple student (only girl)". There are 3 bedrooms for rent in what is a three bedroom house. In other words, it seems pretty clear that the people to move in are not being asked to move in with the landlord or existing tenants. But they are being asked to be Muslim above all else.
The big question is: is this kind of explicit discrimination in housing against non-muslims by private landlords legal, and if it is, should it be? If it isn't who is responsible for dealing with it and what are they going to do?
