Its sad isn't it. There are lots of cats where I live - we have two of our own and a part-time gentleman lodger who comes in when it suits him, though he's supposed to live upstairs next door. Next door downstairs also have two cats.
I have just come across an article in my local paper, which suggests there is quite a widespread problem:

Do you think the widespread adverts, even those in the 'mews' are for the same litter?
We had a full grown cat try to adopt us one year; it was heart wrenching. He was a super animal. I have seen him since, elsewhere, happy, well cared for and just as friendly to me when we recognised each other.
