At 15 St James's Street, between the E17 Social Club and the Indiano Pizza is a little local gem, the Yildirim Bakery. In case the name Yildirim Bakery does not make it clear enough, this delightful little patisserie business announces to the street in large letters on their window that 'We Sell Cakes'. Which indeed they do. With cream on. Eat in or take away. (Tel 020 8223 0504).
They also sell Bread, Pastries, Pides, Sweets, Croisants, "Mafin and Donat" [Muffin and Donuts, to the non-Turkish speakers among us], Apple pie, Cherry pie and Börek. The Börek retails at £1 for a cheese, spinach or potato filled one or £1.50 for one with meat. Those of us who turn up at the right time of day, will be able to watch our Börek, a stuffed piece of pastry, being made. These are rolled very flat by hand in the front of the shop by an expert, and cooked on a large round, curved hotplate, rather like as is also done at the Kapadokya Restaurant round the corner in the High Street.
