At the prime position at number 143 High Street, on the corner opposite the Chequers, next door to the Chinese Shop, (which Afrosia, for various reasons could not make work for them), stands Khan Mobile Communications, a telecommunications firm which has not yet got itself a landline.
They sell mobiles, accessories and phonecards, (what they, in a rather Edwardian touch, to my mind, call 'calling cards'). Just over the High Street are Al-Balal Halal, a butchers shop which has also branched out into the telecom markets, and Ideal Mobile Phones and Convenience Store, one of many businesses, like Khans', which are turning the High Street into a hotspot for small independent telecommunications businesses and making a living competing with the giants of the industry.
