Walthamstow Library was closed this morning following a fire which destroyed an electric fan and a trolley. It last burned down in 1982.

The 1982 fire protection mechanisms almost worked. I wonder if there were any books on the trolley.

Vast numbers of books have been pulped.
Some fool did this to make way for a room full of of cds and dvds- the brave new technology of the last century which has already reached obsolescence.
That is very sad. I am glad the building survived though.

The immediate thought that comes to mind - apart from the fact that your comment suggests it's arson - is, oh hell!
Destroying ones cultural history is the first step to destroying the society from which it came.

I must apologize - I think I was ambiguous. The destruction of the library as a depositary of books, has happened in the past few years. The pulping of the books was done by the council while they were trying to turn the place into a 'media' centre and making room for the cds etc.
I have no idea what the cause of this fire was.

I see, incidents of cultural vandalism that occurred at separate times. My second para regarding the care of ones cultural history is still pertinent here. I think it is sad that this has happened. There are none so blind as those that cannot see.
