Super Grow Foods is the double shop-fronted Afro-Caribbean Supermarket at 235 High Street, next door to the butchers at Premier Foods UK Ltd. It faces out into the so-called Town Square, a good position but one which unfortunately can cause the shop to be slightly overlooked on a busy market day given all the excitement around it.

The shop is a double-fronted affair, entered from the open left side through an impressively wide array of vegetables, past shelves of fresh bread. The dividing wall between the two halves in the middle of the shop knocked through for half of its length. The till is right in the middle of shop, from where the teller can see the many and varied goods on display. From his vantage point he can see shelves of chili and other sauces, popular Caribbean drinks (Ready-made Irish Moss among them),pulses, flours, jams, a chest with frozen snacks and samozas, pickles (Ahmed's and Patak's seemingly dominating our High Street), and all manner of spices, mixes and cooking ingredients.

They have a fair selection of palm oils, variously from Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ghana for £3.39 a litre, as well as Vegetable Ghee for £3.39 for 2kg and £5.39 for 4kg and Butter Ghee at £9.99 for a 2kg tub. Ghee is an important ingredient in Indian cooking, or spiced in Egyptian ('samna baladi'), Eritrean and Ethiopian cuisines

The shop (Tel 0208 509 9880)compares favourably with the Ambrosia and the Madina Supermarkets, (as well as Ummers for spices) on our High Street. To the left of the shop is Perfect Fried Chicken.
