Specsavers Opticians

by technomist @ 2008-03-18 - 12:27:20

Next door to the Hamburger Grill and Abbey is Specsavers at 203 High Street. (Tel: 020 8520 7200). They are open from 10.00am to 5.30 on Mondays and from 9:30am - 6.00pm on Tuesdays to Fridays. On Saturday they open from 9.00am to 5.00pm.

I can't say, as a non-wearer of spectacles, that I am in a position to comment on the quality of their offers, but my fashion-conscious niece is, and she tells me the frames and designs on offer are pretty good. As this is a large chain which can well speak for itself, I shall not comment further.

For people who do not go for the chain experience, other opticians, none of them open on Wednesdays, are open spread out at intervals on our High Street: Amin Opticians (at the St James's Street end of the High Street), Mr Andrew's Opticians next door to Al-Balal Halal Meat (near Sainsbury's), and Eye Fashions, nearby on Palace Parade.

Being a spectacle wearer of considerable experience, and having tried unsuccessfully to get a pair fixed on Walthamstow High Street, I can add something to the mix here. The lady in Specsavers was friendly but ultimately handcuffed by policy "We don't stock those frames. I can't touch them" she told me with a smile, before adding "also, it's my lunch break". The range of frames on offer wasn't large but was competitively priced. As for style, I'm not qualified to judge.

The other place I tried was, I think, Amin's, where there was a similar fear of touching the glasses; though this time due to the likelihood that the arm would snap during an attempted fix. Even though I suggested signing a legal waiver absolving the fixer of any responsibility I was unable to persaude the girl in this shop to attempt the task.

In short, it's hard to get glasses fixed on the High Street

Thank you very much for that information. Its just the sort of useful information I would like to encourage from people who use the local shops.
