Next door to the Police Station, on the corner of the Palace Mews alley stands Mega Bite. There are large plate glass windows, marked hahal, behind which the customers can sit perched on bar stools fixed to the floor at a counter along the right wall. Two or three spartan tables and hard chairs fill up the space at the front of the shop, which is entered up a ramp with a shiny banister. The front of house is spotlessly tiled, has 'hard' acoustics as a result and does not invite lingering.
This is, as the name may suggest, fast food. They are predominantly selling chicken - by the piece, by the wing, by the nugget. Tea comes in styrofoam, dishes other than chicken are called 'sides', beverages are canned pepsi or miranda.
So, here's the scoop: fried chicken pieces start at £1.05 each, in graduated prices and quantities until 6 will cost £4.99. Fried wings or nuggets start at 50p each and are £2 for people who want half a dozen.
They do a Fish and Chips offer at £2.99 and a Chicken Doner wrapped in pitta or tortilla for £2.99. A 'veggie burger' costs £1.59.
To accompany this, 'fries' do not come in small portions, only medium at 79p and large at 99p. Onion rings, potato wedges and something they describe as 'chicken pop corn' cost a £1. A tub of coleslaw or beans costs 60p, corn on the cob 85p.
This can be washed down with tea for 50p, coffee for 80p or a can of soft drink for 50p.
If making your own selection from the exciting fare on offer is difficult, they have a number of meal deals, including a Cheeseburger, 4 wings and fries for £1.99.
Having made your selection, you can stare out the window at the entrance to the mall and eat it.
