N&A Fishmongers 2

by technomist @ 2008-03-04 - 15:54:28

I have previously mentioned the N&A Fishmongers further down the hill at the junction of Vernon Road. This branch is opposite Nationwide and the junction with Erskine Road. It has Ladbrokes at its right and Bunter's Grill to the left.

This branch is as excellent as the one further down the hill, and has almost exactly the same stock, though they do sometimes have the odd unusual extra variety on sale here- last Saturday they had king fish and barracuda. All the old favourites are on sale here - octopus, squid, crab, fresh prawns, mussels, sprats, red snappers, sardines, catfish, trevally jack, sea bream, sea bass, yellow crocker... They also have salted fish and a large range of frozen fish and fruits de mer in the freezer cabinets. I needn't bore you: just think of everything you despise about the insipid range available at Sainsbury's (and the prices), put a peg on your nose and walk on in.

I remember the fish market in CArdiff when I was a kid (it's still there, but I don't go there often). The lava bread was fresh and delicious. It's still difficult to buy elsewhere.

One day these posts will be regarded as a priceless record of vanished shops and cafes... and you, Technomist will be known as the Walthamstow Pepys. ;)

That would be nice. I think Pepys had a very interesting life.
Its interesting that so little is recorded about these places elsewhere. I have found several websites claiming to let people know what is on in Walthamstow or what the shops are like, but they have only a couple of entries, and they are just the really obvious ones. It makes me think that if guides to here are so poor, there must be loads of interesting places in the country which never really get properly looked at or recorded by the people who live there.

I do not think I have ever had lava bread, by the way- which is very remiss of me. My wide loves seaweed, but there is no lava bread available round here. There must be someone selling it in London.

Lava bread is brilliant mixed with oatmeal and fried with bacon :D

I totally agree that there are many, many places in the country which are never properly recorded and many people just pass them by. I remember when I was young my father pointing out a pub with a very small stone head protruding above one of the windows. It was apparently meant to be Disraeli who had apparently married the woman who once lived there.
