Pop In Cafe

by technomist @ 2008-02-11 - 19:46:22

Nest door to Cavern Records is a cafe much in the mould of many others on the High Street, such as the Walthamstove cafe, serving breakfast lunch and dinner according to its sign, but invariably being closed by early evening.

The Pop In Cafe will furnish a plate of Sausage, Egg, Chips and Beans for £2.00, a penny more than is charged for the featured bargain fry-up at the Market Cafe. A plate of Sausage, Egg, Chips and Beans with Bacon, costs £3.35.

Generally, though, they seem to be seeking to promote their less greasy, hearty lunch fare, such as Lamb's Liver, Mash, Bubble or Chips with Bacon, Onions, Peas and Gravy for £4.25.

They do a Lasagne, Chips and Salad for £3.75, Chicken Shish, Chips or Rice and Salad for £3.95 and a Chicken Curry and Rice for the same price.

Roast Lamb or Roast Beef, with Roast Potatoes, 3 veg and gravy comes for £3.75, (some 75p cheaper than at the Market cafe down the road).Shepherds Pie and 3 veg also costs £3.75. Roast Chicken, Chips and Salad costs £4.50.

On the drinks front, there is none of that 'Standard' and 'Grande' nonsense that is so prevalent in chain cafes these days. Pop in Cafe tells it how it is, offering drinks in 'Small' or 'Large'. A small cuppa is 45p, small coffee 60p, and a small hot chocolate 80p. In deference to the modern age, they do offer a small cappucino at 90p. Drinks in cans come at 60p.

Pop In Cafe is not part of the Waltham Forest Community Toilets Scheme .
Toilets, as the sign on the door makes very clear, are for customers only.

I don't have the willpower. Its half way up the road, which on a market day could mean a good twenty minutes. If I'm having a craving for cafe food, there are too many places to pass before I could ever get this far up the High Street.

Are the Community toilets still functioning? If so, Walthamstow must look kindly on the basic needs of its 'rate payers' and visitors.

What a mix of menus and foodie heart stoppers. Just as well one establishment has facilities for its customers, you never know when the need will arise. ;)

The toilets run by the council directly are rather sparse given our population and the firms which have officially opened up their loos to the public as part of the scheme are also quite far apart. Fortunately, there are other places, like Sainsbury's and in the Mall which have loos.

A tip that came from my sister, who is a doctor: She told me that looking for a bookie's is how some ambulance crews solve their needs in unfamiliar areas. Betting shops often have quite good loos and no-one bothers much if someone goes in, uses the loo, looks at a betting screen and leaves the place shaking their head as if they have just lost on the last race.

I like the betting shop tip - but where I live, where everyone usually knows everyone and who goes where, it would be an unlikely bet for Jo Public to use betting shop facilities in the same way unless they were regulars. Added to which, there is only one such place in the town.

Certainly, your point about inadequate facilities tends to be a universal one. We're glad of the odd shop that has a convenient place, or a baker shop and cafe that will oblige. Bars and hotels are the other options.

When in the city, I will remember your guidance.
