This shop had an excellent position on the corner of the High Street with Buxton Road, opposite the Post Office and the Cock.
They helpfully put lighting on their sign over the premises which has brightened up the whole corner in the early winter evenings.
Tradicia sold Russian, Ukrainian and Eastern European delicatessen. This meant for the uninitiated that they had a chiller cabinet full of sausages and cold cuts, smoked fish, herrings and cheeses. They also stocked elaborate cakes for celebrations and ice-creams. They also stocked imported beers, an awful lot of dumplings with various fillings, pickles, pate, tinned fish, preserved fruit and juice, and biscuits, snacks and black bread.
The shop was refurbished to look slightly more up-market than Baltika down the road, though it does not appear to be much more expensive. It did have a clean, spacious, bright and inviting feel to it, and smelled of warm pine.
All of which is apparently over, because the place seems to have been shut, so that a couple of jerry-builders can ruin it. We will eventually find out why.
[Updated 1 May 2009]
Bought some wonderful Lithuanian recipe bread from this place over the weekend. Still warm when I got it home. Noticed the tail of the wooden capital 'T' on the rustic Tradicia shop sign fell off (woodworm?) a week or so ago but they have quickly repaired it. I really like the etched glass windows too. This shop is a very nice addition to the western end of High Street.
