The Market Cafe

by technomist @ 2007-12-07 - 17:12:17

Between Miche Exclusive Jewelry and Nikki is the Market Cafe. Regrettably, there is not much to recommend about this establishment, which recently sold me the second worst quality sausages in its basic sausage sandwich I have ever been charged money for. (The worst are available, for the curious, at Hamburger Grill).

However, the cafe does seem to have a fair few fans, so I had better explain what the attraction is. Apart from the lace curtains, allowing the patrons a degree of privacy when eating from the green formica tables and the photo of Lady Diana, there is an extensive menu of lunchtime cafe standards.

These include variations to accompany roast potatoes and three veg, at £4.50, of roast beef, roast lamb, lamb chops, roast chicken and shepherd's pie.

£4.50 will also get you steak and kidney pie, but I am not clear what goes with that.

For £4.00 you can order:

Cod, scampi or plaice with chips and peas; lamb's liver, egg, bacon, chips and onions;chicken curry and rice; lasagne chips and salad; or stewed steak and the roast potatoes and 3 veg.

£3.80 will buy a jacket potato with either chili con carne or cheese and beans and for £3.70 there is a portion of Turkish Shepherd's Pie on offer.

The breakfast special offer is egg, chips, sausage and beans for £1.99, which is a full penny saving on a similar offer at the Pop In Cafe up the hill.

Actually, I knew as soon as I walked in to the place, but I had to be fair and give them a chance. How they keep going I don't know.

:) There was a best online gourmet food sites in the Independent a few weeks ago, and I stupidly thought I'd give one of them a try...I can honestly say that I'm now considerably poorer and wouldn't touch any of their products with a barge pole after this first purchase...I'm ploughing through the several items I did buy and have yet to find one I can truthfully say is great...the most I can manage is just about edible...and in one case...not...:-/ If anybody's tempted as a treat for xmas, do be careful with these beautifully illustrated sites because there's a world of difference between lovely appearance and taste...HLOL...big hugs...

Good advice. :)

Must admit I do find a lot of the modern 'gourmet' food outlets or French market produce rather disappointing more often than not...the odd thing is, we probably had a lot more choice and better quality food in the old delicatessens that used to be found in towns and cities, and have since mostly disappeared unable to compete with the supermarkets invasion...the new ones are poor imitations of those earlier ones...except Neal's Yard delicatessens, they've never changed...unfortunately, not one near to us in any direction...:-/

If this place aspired to be a gourmet outlet, or even matched a minimal standard such had been set by the likes of Wimpy in my youth, I would make allowances, and forgive them. Delicatessen, this is not.

Neal's Yard isn't a deli...what do you call them then?

Neil's yard is a cheese shop. We generally reserve the name deli for somewhere which is selling imported stuff.

I thought Neal's Yard sold cheeses from all round the world and bread? Hubby thought he remembered salamis and hams as well in the one in Shrewsbury but it could be memory tricks...and yes, I call a deli somewhere that sells food from all round the world...haven't seen a proper one for such a long time was searching for the nearest one to a deli and that was Neal's Yard...

I don't go to Neil's Yard much, I must admit - they only have branches in districts where the shops can over-charge people. They are not cheap, trying to position their wares as premium, almost luxury products.

Generally, they are best known for the cheeses. These do come from around the world, though they are known in particular for supporting small independent British and Irish cheesemakers, but I'm sure they sell all manner of other things.

Just realised you're not talking about Neal's Yard are you...:)) Sorry..presume you're referring to the Market Cafe....

Now I'm really confused. I thought Neal's Yard sold organic cosmetics and herbal remedies at extraordinary prices in Covent Garden and Richmond... sausages? cheeses?

No, definitely cheese and bread for sure and maybe meats, but never seen organic cosmetics or herbal remedies in there...but several years since I've been in one so you never know, they might now :)...I'm having real trouble naming a delicatessen because they used to be owned by usually foreign families and have now gone out of business because of supermarket competition so there's no particular one I can quickly name...Neal's Yard was the nearest shop I could think of that had that deli feel to it...bet you're really really confused now...:))Had a great one in Shepherd's Market which I frequented when in my late teens early 20's, but have no idea whether it's still there. Used to work in Curzon Street and would buy my lunch in their most days and my baps in the Boulangerie on the corner leading into the market...hmmm...strange going down memory lane again...big hugs.

I have looked into this: It seems there are at least two businesses which have come to be associated with the name Neal's Yard, which both have had stores in the same place and expanded on.

There are also a number of others which rely on the location to act as a magnet for custom so they emphasise their location:

Oh, so they do sell remedies and stuff as well...hmmm...not a deli then HLOL...more a big franchise across the country...hmmm...not what I was thinking about at all...big hugs...

Saved me a walk. I was going to go over there tomorrow morning just to see whether it had turned into a deli...

There is a really good Italian deli on Stoke Newington Road. As you face south towards Kingsland High Street, the deli is on your right. Can't remember the name of it but they do an amazing selection of sausages, cheeses, breads, pastas, oils etc. Great place to buy christmas presents too. Parking is rubbish so I suggest getting the train to Stoke Newington Station and walking down. Church Street has a good selection of non chain shops but I personally find them a little too twee/trendy.

That's great if you live in London...as I live in Bournemouth now, it's rather a long way to go to buy those goodies...:))

Most places would refund the money if one is unhappy with the product.

cheers

This is what they call a 'greasy spoon'. You pay very little and expect very little: if they serve something you don't like, unless its actually not cooked properly or they made a mistake with your order, you can't expect them to care about it much: just go elsewhere.

I would love to see a map of London joining the dots of these places you are mentioning - that way I could plan a good trip to London for next year, knowing exactly what to avoid :P

Its very simple- they are all in a straight line going straight up Walthamstow High Street from the bottom to the top (so far I have got to about the half-way stage). I wouldn't plan more than a day around a visit to Walthamstow; the market is probably the longest street market in Europe. It is a good day out on a Saturday and very easy to get to from central London by public transport.

I only go to my local butchers for sausages as they are the best i have ever tasted, - :))

I think the best I ever had were made by a butcher at Adams', the butchers in the High Street in Stamford about 25+ years ago. He made the archetypal Lincolnshire Sausage, of which all others since are but a pale imitation. Unfortunately Adams was bought out by a chain and it was downhill from then.

We do have a sausage specialist locally, on Hoe Street in Walthamstow, but I think of some of his fillings as being a bit 'foodie' and contrived.

"You pay very little and expect very little" - and even then you can be disappointed!

I'm like Artemis, I prefer sausages made by my local butcher too. They are simple, nothing pretentious, and reasonably priced. :)

I'm always up for a decent nosh. If anyone wants to nominate good sausage suppliers on this site, feel free. :)
