This shop used to have bras and lingerie in abundance. Next door to Books Ink, it was a large, deep shop full of the scanty, the seductive and the serviceable. The scanty cames in astonishingly small bundles; prices were correspondingly miniscule, with thongs starting at 79p for a pack of three.
The seductive, if not downright slutty, cost quite a bit more. As they also catered for the fuller, more curvy figure, this shop probably made quite a lot of Walthamstow folk very happy.
I am not putting myself forward as an expert on these ranges of sexy lingerie, so can't say if this shop was expensive or not at the top end of their range of merchandise. The serviceable stuff, (thermal tops at ₤1.99) seemed fairly priced to me. There was a sign in the window announcing
"Marks and Expensive Stock available at Walthamstow Prices"
In the entrance area they had been stocking some inexpensive coats, the cheapest at an amazing ₤1.99, and stocking plastic ladies clogs for ₤2.99.
For such an unashamedly feminine establishment, they also had a number of items available for boys and men, including an offer of men's shirts at 3 for ₤5 or ₤1.99 each. Apparently their men's ranges sold quite well, though I was the only bloke among a lot of women on the day I nosed around in there.
Benny Dee was at 136-138 High Street, next door to Books Ink. It was on the corner with Selbourne Avenue, a grand sounding road which is now really just a rear access route to the Mall. The other corner is occupied by Mr Zhong.
It has now been divided into three shops, the corner taken by a phone accessories business, formerly known as Orientex Mobile, the middle by The Haberdashery and the right one is Maktan's, a ladies underwear business.
