The exact translation of the now closed Yu Yi varies depending on who you ask, but it basically means 'doctor for the court, or royal family'. This may seem a strange name for a shop which sold cheap Chinese luggage, shoes, household accessories and toys. Even in China these goods were for the bottom end of the market.
The name may have had something to do with their also selling a small range of Chinese medicines, predominantly nostrums intended as food supplements (like Ginseng drinks) and Feiyan, which is drunk as a weight-loss tea.
Yu Yi was at 132 High Street, next door to the also defunct Cheltenham and Gloucester and the very much still alive Books Ink. The site now hosts Ferdine Fabrics.
