Next door to Fish Brothers is a small halal butcher which one needs to use the next door over-hanging clock to find when the market is really humming. It is worth a look in because like the High Quality Halal Meat on the other side of the road, it has prices worth thinking about for people looking for larger quantities, in particular, they sell goat meat at four pounds ninety-nine for 5lb and mutton shoulder at one pound sixty-nine per lb. Chicken mince costs five pounds ninety-nine for five lb and the same amount of boneless chicken at seven ninety-nine.
There is a currently out of date sign in the window indicating that they stock meat which has been certified as halal by the Bray Islamic Society in Ireland, the meat having been slaughtered at Liffey Meats in Cavan. This company slaughters some 120,000 cattle a year for continuous refrigerated export all over the world and also supplies Tesco and Lidl, where, no doubt, they sell it wrapped in plastic.
The other international connections of this butchers shop are reflected in its side line in international telephone calling cards. That's Walthamstow for you.
