In the year 2006-7, the Tote increased its gross profit by 12.5%. This increasing government income, some ₤158million gross profit in total (yes, this is a state-owned enterprise) was not spent proportionately in Walthamstow.
At least the Tote doesn't actually promote gambling as if it is all clean harmless fun, as they do down the road at Paddy Power.
This publicly owned cash-hoover in our High Street, next door to Pound Power, could do something useful for the rest of us, like opening their toilets to the public as part of the Walthamstow Community Toilets Scheme. It doesn't.
