It seems that few self respecting High Streets these days are without various opportunities for gambling. Quicksilver, of which there are two examples on ours, is joined in the middle of the bottom section of the High Street by Paddy Power. Around this business are a number of shops which seem to have gone bust. Perhaps if the bookmakers and slots weren't hoovering up their customers' disposable income and shipping the profits back to shareholders who live far far away from here (and sometimes the non-disposable, hence the prevalence of pawn-broking as a business on our local High Street) these sites would have socially useful businesses in them.
Instead, Paddy Power thrives. They have very carefully designed bright friendly green corporate colours, with grey/silver and bright yellow lettering.
The advertising come-ons are interesting. They have comfortable seating, air conditioning, disabled facilities and 'daily concessions' - returning all the losing bets on selected events - no doubt to lull people into thinking its all good clean fun and not a profit making enterprise at all. They proudly announce that they offer 'live' sport inside. As if they would let anyone bet on repeats.
Paddy Power is where our local Chinese DVD sellers usually hide when they see our local police coming a mile off.
