New Fabric Store

by technomist @ 2007-10-25 - 17:09:59

Sari lengths on display on hangers for four or four pounds fifty, cloth on the bail from one pound a meter. I think it would take an expert to tell me if the New fabric Shop at no. 91 High Street is better than PCE Fabric Store at No 96, Hussain Fabrics or Fabric Store. I can't see how the prices in these shops could be any more competitive.

There are a lot of rolls, and it must be difficult to keep them all in order. A sign asks customers not to move the rolls, but ask a member of staff to be served.

3 fabric shops in one area! I wonder what people are sewing?

There are more than that, but I haven't got up the hill yet to where those shops are. I suppose they so their own clothes or make cushion covers and curtains.

I used to do a lot of sewing - hardly any sewing shops about in my area now, and the single fabric stall in the local market has closed due to lack of business.

Its sad isn't it.

I think that the fact these shops are in a cluster is helping them to keep the interest alive - they are not making it difficult for people to use them and there are other shops, like the internet cafe that sells trimmings which contribute to their success.

Near where I live the large weekly market used to have eighteen fabric stalls about 25 years ago. The last one left about two years ago. He said he made more money when there were eighteen stalls than he did on his own. So your theory could well be right!

We have a number of these clusters on our High Street - what seems to me to be an awful lot of beauty treatment going on, charity shops and also pawn brokering and cheque cashing. I'm glad the fabric businesses are still holding their own.
