Cafe Rio

by technomist @ 2007-10-25 - 16:18:43

Cafe Rio, like Cafe Azrou is an excellent place for loafing and looking at other people, even when the market is not trading. It has a lively, interesting interior which bursts enthusiastically out onto the street where its tables take up place which would otherwise comprise of market stalls on market days. (They have a street trader's license which I think covers this technicality).

A very welcome addition to this previously dead part of the High Street, Cafe Rio is open every day from 8.00am, except Sundays when they open at 10.00am. They sell Ciabattas (for three pounds fifty) with various toppings; such as Ham and Brie, or Mozzarella, Pesto and Tomato; ice cream and milk shakes - three flavours and good coffee. What they do is do the simple things well. They play world music at a reasonable pitch to make the place feel like something interesting may just be taking place locally, merely by their customers being there.

The manager, who I recently spoke to, does not think he has to advertise this successful business. I tend to agree; there is a good feel about the place and an optimism which needs to be caught by some of the other businesses around it.

they do a wicked hot chocolate too...
As I sat outside this cafe drinking my hot chocolate last weekend (the only missing item being a copy of the Observer) I almost felt as though I was in 'trendy' Notting Hill. I don't know whether that should be read as a bad sign, but with a couple more places like this, and a few more 'up and comin' designer wear shops, galleries, and a couple of decent bookshops, who knows? Walthamstow has huge potential and 10 years from now, I'll probably be kicking myself for not having moved into the area when property prices were reasonable (well, at least compared with other areas in London)...

It was an 'up and coming' area about twenty tears ago. To be fair, there have been changes in that time, many of which were improvements, but the council and Transport for London could do with some big thinking to really get this place buzzing.

It can sometimes take an hour on the bus to get from the lower end of the High Street a couple of miles to Stratford - where we will all soon be getting trains to Paris which only take two.
