To a pedestrian walking from the bottom to the top of the High Street on one of the non-market days, Bar Rendezvous sticks out as one of the first, most obvious signs of global warming as well as social change in the last few years in Walthamstow. No longer the preserve of the inebriate; organized loafing in the open air has become accessible to the coffee drinking classes.
Sited by the public phone box, and convenient for the Post Office with its extensive magazine racks, Bar Rendezvous is a cafe which sometimes has tables outside. Its half dozen tables are roped off from the rest of the pedestrianised street along with two fine red umbrellas and a couple of large pot plants. Like Queen's Cafe down the road, and Cafe Azrou up it, they offer Pannini, as well as Cappucino, Espresso, Sandwiches and Burgers. A full menu on a chalk board can be seen easily through the large windows, as well as a hearty welcome in many languages.
